Questions have been raised in the US media over whether military officials have been distorting intelligence assessments of the current US-led military campaign against Islamic State insurgent positions within Iraq. On 26 August, The New York Times reported that an unnamed civilian analyst working for the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) had claimed to have evidence that officials working at United States Central Command (CENTCOM) were reworking the conclusions of draft intelligence assessments to give them a more favourable slant. These assessments were then passed to senior policymakers, including US president Barack Obama. Consequently, an investigation has been launched by the Department of Defense's Inspector General into the veracity of these claims.
