Nigeria overhauls security heads

Nigerian president Muham-madu Buhari has made sweeping changes to his government's senior security officials. In an overhaul on 14 July, he named a new head of the country's Defence Intelligence Agency, Air Vice Marshal Riku Morgan; replaced the heads of the army, navy, and air force; and appointed a new chief of defence staff and national security adviser. These far-reaching changes to Nigeria's defence and security apparatus come as Buhari looks to crack down on terrorist activity from the Boko Haram militant group, which appears to have grown in strength since the start of 2015. At the beginning of July, more than 140 people were killed in a spate of massacres carried out at mosques and in villages within Borno State in the northeast of the country, close to the border with Chad.
