Mexican security forces crack down on cartels after Zetas leader arrest

Mexico's security forces captured the leader of Los Zetas criminal organisation, Omar Trevino Morales (alias Z-42), on 4 March in San Pedro Garza Garcia municipality, Nuevo Leon state. No shots were fired in the capture, highlighting the enhanced ability of the Mexican intelligence services, particularly that of the navy, to identify the whereabouts of top organised crime leaders and successfully conduct arrest operations. Since 2009, naval, army, and Federal Police units have captured or killed 33 of the top 40 organised crime bosses identified by the Mexican Attorney General's Office. Security force efforts are now likely to centre on capturing the seven individuals who remain at large, including the Sinaloa Cartel's Ismael Zambada Garcia (alias El Mayo) and Juan Jose Esparragoza Moreno (alias El Azul).
