Brittle crack arrest (BCA) steels are used in the upper deck or hatch side coaming of large container ships in order to prevent fatal brittle fracture accidents. The International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) defined BCA steels for container ships by using the Kca or CAT requirement in their unified requirement (UR). Currently, there are no standardized isothermal crack arrest tests and no relevant CAT requirements, and even IACS UR refers to CAT.The two definitions of BCA steels by Kca and CAT should be consistent in order to avoid differences in the safety levels against brittle crack propagation in container ships using BCA steel with different requirement. Thus it is important to establish a standard CAT test procedure and CAT requirement that will be consistent with Kca requirements, in order to overcome the discrepancy between the two definitions.In this study, the effects of test parameters in isothermal crack arrest tests on CAT were investigated in order to establish the basis of developing isothermal CAT testing procedure standard.
