If the White House gets its way US Army leaders will be shuffled into key, Senate-confirmed positions: a move that could potentially solidify the continuation of the service's six key modernisation priorities. Mark Esper left his post as the army's secretary to take the reins as the acting secretary of defence on 24 June and the White House has announced its intention to formally nominate him to take on the role full time. If formally nominated and confirmed by the Senate, Esper would be the top civilian leading the department with current US Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley by his side as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The four-star general must also be confirmed by Congress.
