USAF aims high for trainee excellence in half the time

US Air Force (USAF) Special Operations Command (AFSOC) has implemented a significant revision in the training programme for Combat Control Team (CCT) members of its Special Tactics (ST) elements. The new programme, which first emerged in early 2001, reflects a radically new way of viewing the training of special operations personnel. Special Tactics focuses on the ground combat elements of the USAF. ST forces include Combat Controllers (CC), Pararescue (PJs) and Combat Weather airmen. The CCs and PJs are assigned to 19 ST "Flights" worldwide with the Combat Weathermen embedded in special operations components of the other armed services. Each AFSOC ST Flight includes 18 CC and PJ operators who are task-organised to meet mission requirements. Five of the 19 Flights are on worldwide alert at any one time.
