Officials involved in the development of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) say the next-generation aircraft will be a potent platform for supporting ground troops, but will break the mould of the aircraft flying these missions. Traditionally, aircraft such as the A-10 Thunderbolt II, which is considered by some to be the quintessential ground-support aircraft due to its powerful 30 mm Galling gun, have come in low to bomb or strafe enemy positions in proximity of friendly forces.
