Spain Increases Numbers Limit On Service Personnel Posted Abroad

Spain is to remove its current 3,000 upper limit on the number of service personnel that can be posted abroad at any one time. From next year, up to 7,700 personnel could theoretically be made available, Defence Minister Carme Chacon told Parliament on 10 December. "The number of soldiers on international missions will be limited only by the legality of the mission, the will of the Spanish people and the capacity of the armed forces," she said. The previous 3,000 limit has stood since 2005, introduced by a Socialist government that was angered by its conservative pred- ecessor's support for the US-led invasion of Iraq without seeking parliamentary approval first.
