France plans radical reorganisation of national security

France plans to shortly establish a National Defence and Security Council that will make no distinction between external and domestic threats to the country, as has been the case up to now. Officials in President Nicolas Sarkozy's office said on 3 January that the new council, roughly similar in concept to the National Security Council in the United States, would be formed shortly after publication of a French White Paper on Defence in March.
