EU requests that South Africa join anti-piracy effort

The EU used the second EU-South Africa summit on 11 September to formally request that South Africa participate in the International piracy deterrence effort in the Gulf of Aden off the Somali coast.rnEU foreign affairs and security chief Javier Solana noted that as a "key strategic partner" of the EU, a designation welcomed by Pretoria, South Africa had responsibilities. "This is a country with an important navy; it is an important country in Africa. In that region there are ships from just about every important country in the world and we would like to co-ordinate [the South African presence] with them," Solana said.
