Saab has claimed it could deliver new JAS-39C/D Gripen aircraft to Bulgaria for the same price as second-hand F-16s, as competition intensifies over the country's fighter modernisation programme.rnDaniel Boestad, Gripen campaign director in Bulgaria, argued that the Swedish aircraft would also offer significantly cheaper maintenance costs when compared with a second-hand solution.rn"The decision to purchase second-hand fighters is very risky and expensive. Second-hand machines are at the end of their life cycle and this would mean that in only a few years Bulgaria will have to re-initiate the acquisition of aircraft. The cost of second-hand aircraft is larger and carries no economic benefits with regard to offsets," he claimed.
