The US Senate on 21 June unanimously voted to confirm Leon Panetta as the next Secretary of Defense, replacing the retiring Robert Gates. Panetta, currently director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), will soon leave his post, which is expected to be backfilled by the commander of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan, General David Petraeus, pending his own Senate confirmation.
