South African forces prioritise border security

Following a new directive from the government, the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) will prioritise "border safeguarding" over other operations in a reversal of an earlier emphasis on regional peace support missions.It is unclear what the implica-tions of the SANDF's change in focus will have on continent-wide or regional peace support opera-tions; the force is traditionally one of the strongest and most capa-ble contributors to peacekeeping in Africa.
