UK signs access deal with Kazakhstan

UK Defence Secretary Philip Hammond signed an agreement in Kazakhstan on 27 February for overflight access so that military equipment can move to and from Afghanistan ahead of the planned withdrawal of British forces in 2014, the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said.The UK is negotiating with several central Asian countries to secure overflight and land access. Hammond and Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev are also to start negotiations on a land transit agreement.The agreement came the day before a series of meetings between Hammond and senior Uzbek officials were due to start on "talks for a land transit agreement to open up a northern supply route to get military equipment out of Afghanistan", the statement said.
