SM-6 missile extends air defence coverage beyond the horizon

Back in the mid-1990s the USN started to explore the feasibility of an Air-Directed Surface-to-Air Missile (ADSAM) system for Overland Cruise Missile Defense (OCMD). The ADSAM concept was developed to address the threat posed by cruise missiles to ship-and shore-based forces, recognising that the major limitation to shipborne OCMD was the inability of shipboard radars to see low-flying targets far inland owing to the Earth's curvature and terrain blockage. Furthermore, cruise missiles can also change course, making identification of their intended targets as uncertain as with the engagement of manned aircraft.
