With an exclusive economic zone covering 132,000 n miles~2, plus extensive additional claims in the Atlantic Ocean, Ireland's maritime domain-to-land ratio is the highest of any country in northwest Europe. The task of adequately monitoring this area, which includes some of the region's most valuable fisheries, poses a stiff test for the fleet of eight patrol ships operated by the Irish Naval Service (INS) The Next-Generation Recognised Maritime Picture (NG-RMP) project aims to significantly enhance INS situational awareness by focusing on two key objectives: first, it will integrate emerging Satellite Automatic Identification (S-AIS) technology with regular AIS, Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), radar, CCTV, and other data feeds; second, an automated decision support system will apply data mining and advanced visualisation techniques to generate a "dynamic and improved" RMP, allowing any suspicious vessel behaviour to be identified promptly.
