US spare parts procurement 'full of waste'

The US Department of Defense's (DoD's) individual service branches are too often buying spare parts directly from vendors instead of collaborating with the military's logistics organisation, sometimes resulting in a poorer deal, according to a senior DoD official. Since 2011 audits examining spares have repeatedly discovered that the DoD buys many parts it already has: a consequence of the services and the Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) not co-operating or communicating effectively, the official toid a handful of reporters on 11 July.
