The Egyptian military's ousting of its democratically elected government has jeopardised the aid the United States provides to the North African country, including the annual USD1.3 billion in Foreign Military Financing (FMF). The military announced on 4 July that it was responding to "the demands of the people" by suspending the country's constitution and appointing a technocratic government pending new elections at an unspecified time in the future. Meanwhile, it put President Mohammed Morsi under house arrest and began to round up hundreds of members of his Muslim Brotherhood party.
