Egypt orders Gowind corvettes

French shipbuilder DCNS has signed a contract covering the delivery of four Gowind corvettes to Egypt, it was revealed on 3 June. One of the corvettes will be built at the DCNS yard in Lorient while the other three will be con structed in Alexandria, both AFP and France's La Tribune newspaper reported. DCNS refused to comment, but a knowledgeable source confirmed to IHS Jane's that this information is accurate. La Tribune stated the contract is worth about EUR1 billion (USD 1.4 billion) excluding weapons, which are likely to include MBDA Exocet anti-ship missiles and MBDA VL-MICA short-range surface-to-air missiles. The newspaper added the vessels would weigh 2,400 tonnes.
