Ukraine increases defence and security spending

The government of Ukraine will increase spending on defence and security by 15.6% in 2014 to UAH52.4 billion (USD4.66 billion) or 3.4% of GDP as it reacts to the occupation of Crimea by Russian forces. The commitment to increased spending was made in a 30 March statement on the Budget Law 27.03.2014 No. 1128, which introduced amendments to the existing 2014 state budget. The revised budget comprises a main defence and security budget allocation of UAH40.53 billion (USD3.6 billion), plus a special defence and security reserve fund worth UAHS billion (USD440 million). This is to be supplemented by an increase of UAH6.9 billion (USD600 million) in the general budget reserve fund "to finance measures to ensure the defence of the state".
