Russia deploys S-400s to Syria in response to downing of Su-24

Russia has responded to Turkey shooting down one of its Sukhoi Su-24M 'Fencer' aircraft on 24 November by deploying advanced S-400 surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems into Syria to protect its aircraft based there. The Su-24M was shot down by a Turkish Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon after it violated Turkish airspace while conducting strikes along the border against Syrian rebels backed by Turkey. Two 5P85SM transporter erector launchers (TELs) for the S-400 system were airlifted into Hmeymim air base by an Antonov An-124 on 26 November.
