Chile's S-70i helos to be used for CSAR, special ops

The Sikorsky S-70i Black Hawk helicopters recently selected by the Chilean Air Force (Fuerza Aerea de Chile: FACh) are to be used mainly for combat search-and-rescue (CSAR) and special operations roles, but will also be available for community support and disaster relief, sources in Santiago have told IHS Jane's. A USD180 million direct sales contract for a batch of six helicopters is expected to be awarded by year's end. Negotiations for the deal are to startthis month and plans indicate the FACh is seeking at least 12 S-70i helicopters, the sources added. The acquisition would lead to retirement of the remaining Bell UH-lHs still in service in Chile in the utility and liaison roles.
