India mulls response following attack on Kashmir army base

New Delhi is planning a mix of military, diplomatic, and political responses against neighbouring Pakistan, which it blames for the 18 September attack on an army base in Indian-administered Kashmir in which 18 soldiers were killed and 30 injured. "How to punish; that is for us to work out," Indian defence minister Manohar Parrikar said in New Delhi on 21 September. "We are serious about it," he added without elaborating. Parrikar was speaking after attending a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security chaired by Prime Minister Naren-dra Modi to determine an 'effective' riposte against Pakistan for what India claims is Islamabad's backing of the militant attack on Uri cantonment, located about 6 km from the Line of Control (LoC) that divides the disputed region of Kashmir between the nuclear-armed neighbours.
