US reveals force posture in Afghanistan

US forces in Afghanistan are drawing down to about 8,400 personnel and those will include a mix of troops dedicated to counter-terrorism or to advising local units, as well as a pool of support 'enablers'. The United States is to have about 2,150 troops "focused on our counter-terrorism mission against the nine terrorist groups that are in the area", another 3,000 in an advising role, and 3,300 troops serving as enablers for the counter-terrorism and advising missions, General John Nicholson, commander of NATO's 'Resolute Support' mission and of US Forces - Afghanistan, said on 12 July.
