UK Royal Marines face restructuring to balance Royal Navy manpower shortage

One of the UK Royal Marines' three amphibious infantry units is being re-roled to provide small detachments of embarked forces on Royal Navy (RN) warships. The move to create what is being dubbed a Maritime Opera-tions Commando was announced by the head of the RN, Admiral Sir Philip Jones, on 11 April. The plans will see the strength of the Royal Marines reduced by 200 to free up personnel to bolster shortages in other branches of the naval service. A further 200 posts will be reorganised within the RN itself to free up person-nel from administrative posts to allow extra sailors to be trans-ferred to frontline duties.
