Russian carrier comes home as military police deploy to Aleppo

Russia's only aircraft carrier, Admiral Kuznetsov, is to be withdrawn from the country's military operation in Syria, the head of the Russian General Staff, General Valery Gerasimov, announced on 6 January. He did not say when it will begin its return journey to its home base at Severomorsk. Kuznetsov arrived in the Eastern Mediterranean in early November 2016, but its air wing subsequently lost two aircraft in accidents attributed to problems with the carrier's arrestor gear.
