Difficult landside questions linger after Brussels and Istanbul

In the morning of 22 March 2016, terrorists detonated two bombs in the check-in area of Brussels Airport, killing 17 people and injuring 81. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the bombings and a simultaneous attack on the Brussels Metro. On 29 June 2016, in another attack on land-side infrastructure at an international airport, 41 people were killed and 230 were wounded when three suicide bombers struck at Istanbul Ataturk. According to investigators, the attackers opened fire on police at the terminal entrance where x-ray machines are positioned, and two ran into the building.
