The combination of lower neighbor-hood densities with other factors, such as a more prosperous society and concerns about the safety of children walking alone, has resulted in a significant proportion of elementary schoolchildren being transported to and from school in automobiles. At some schools, so many parents are trying to access the school by auto that traffic congestion occurs on the surrounding streets at school beginning and dismissal times.
