R&D funding receives some good news amid major uncertainty

Despite continuing calls from many in Congress to cut spending, the fiscal year (FY) 2013 appropriations process has generally been positive for a number of R&D agencies, with some key science funders seeing surprising increases in the early going. However, any good news must be tempered by the realities of the current fiscal climate. No funding legislation has been finalized to date; nor is it clear how many spending bills, if any, will be finalized and signed into law before the November elections.
