ISO standard for safety signs - used locally, understood globally

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but when it comes to graphical symbols for safety-related information, misunderstanding the message may have serious consequences. An International Standard aims to improve understanding and proper application of safety signs designed to reduce accidents and injury in workplaces and public areas worldwide. ISO 7010:2003, Graphical symbols - Safety colours and safety signs - Safety signs used in workplaces and public areas, provides a method of communicating safety information through a collection of signs designed for use in any workplace, location and sector where safety-related questions may be posed. According to Paul Bischof, Convenor of the working group that developed the new standard, ISO 7010 provides a reliable "red line" to follow for those responsible for installing a safety sign in workplaces and public areas.
