In both a formative and summative evaluation of student performance, there is an underlying requirement for reliability and validity to ensure the quality of data. The emerging online learning environments (OLEs) share this requirement for valid, meaningful assessment with their traditional face-to-face delivery models. Indeed, the challenges to assessment in an OLE necessitate a variety of responses. For example, how will authentic and standardized assessment function in an OLE? Are there ways for this virtual learning and assessment space to further benefit the learner beyond traditional methodologies? How does authentic assessment and non-objective evaluation exist and flourish in an online environment? The product chosen for this review seeks to answer these questions and challenges, by providing an enterprise solution to not only testing and evaluating students through online assessments, but also providing an approach that holistically includes the use of raw data for detailed statistical analysis - such as program or institutional effectiveness reports.
