According to Statista, a German provider of statistical information, it was the northern Italian port of Genoa and the southern Italian hub of Gioia Tauro that were the leading hubs in the country when it came to handling containers last year. Genoa loaded or unloaded approximately 2.6 million teu, whilst Gioia Tauro managed approximately 2.3 million teu. Genoa's figure was reached despite the disaster of the collapse of the Morandi bridge last year.
