National infrastructure operator Bane Nor has settled on a definite timeframe in which it plans to implement level 2 of the European Train Control System (ETCS L2) in the entire railway network of the Norwegian railways. Bane Nor has set itself a target - it wants to complete the work for the 4,200 km of railtracks and 375 railway stations (including Oslo central) by the year 2034. The project will start in 2022, with the Gjøvik Line (Oslo-Gjøvik) and the northern segment of the Nordlands Line (Grong-Bodø). A test phase with ETCS L2 has been running on the eastern Østfold Line (Mysen-Ski) since 2013. When trains operate under ETCS L2 there is continuous communication between locomotive and tracks through a Global System for Mobile Communication - Rail (GSM-R). It issues the train with orders to drive and brake.
