After the competition regulators in the EU and the USA have given their blessing, there is nothing standing in the way of the merger of Air France SA, Paris, and KLMNV—Royal Dutch Airlines, Amstelveen, to form Europe's largest airline. Although, due to EU stipulations, the future partners had to surrender 94 take-off and landing slots to the competition, between the two of them they control over a quarter of the European passenger market, thus stealing a march on British Airways (BA) and Germany's Lufthansa. In global comparison, Air France-KLM's passenger volumes will ensure it fourth place just after the three U.S. giants American, Delta and United.
