NYK Line tests first solar-powered freighter

The Japanese shipping line NYK Line is collaborating with Nippon Oil Corp to test the first freighter vessel to be partially propelled by solar power. The trial will be carried out with an automobile carrier which has a capacity of 6,400 units. The companies are currently installing 328 solar panels on the deck, and the job will be completed by mid-December, according to the shipping line in Tokyo (Japan). The ship will then undergo sea trials of 1-2 years at the beginning of 2009.
