NYK has successfully trialled a new type of 'cold ironing' transformer, which is undergoing testing at the port of Los Angeles, on its 8,600TEU new-build NYK Atlas (due to be in service this month). The compact transformer, which can supply a ship with power directly from land while it is berthed, is housed in a container unit on deck. According to NYK, this system allows ships currently in service to be modified without the need for any major renovation. The carrier has decided to equip all the large containerships it operates with these environmentally friendly units.
