New Leon Distribution Centre For Mercadona Supermarket Chain

At the end of December 2008 the Park-stein-based German general contractor Witron Logistik und Informatik was awarded an assignment to plan and construct a distribution centre in Leon (northern Spain) for the Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona. 170 Mercadona branches will be supplied from Leon in future. Witron will install its standard modular picking and packing systems in the new facility - its so-called order picking machinery (OPM) and the dynamic picking system (DPS). These have already been set up in distribution centres that the enterprise previously realised together with Mercadona. The supermarket chain is considered one of the fastest-growing operators in its sector in Spain. It employs a staff of 60,000 in 1,210 shops and its annual sales amounted to approximately EUR 14 billion in 2007.
