In the days of tighter profit margins, some managers in the airfreight business resort to illegal measures time and again in order to create advantages for themselves and their firms. In most cases, that is not life threatening, but can be punished with severe fines. Another corruption scandal has broken in India again over the last few weeks. This time, the focus of the country - not inexperienced when it comes to corruption scandals, after all - is on the training of pilots and the national aviation supervisory body. By mid-April more than 20 pilots who had been employed by various airlines had already been arrested for possessing fake documents. The Indian federal aviation authority, in charge of the respective inspections and awarding of licenses, now intends to assess the qualifications of 4,000 pilots who are active in commercial air traffic. The reputation of those affected is at stake, but so is the costly material involved, aviation safety - and thus ultimately human lives too.
