Green power, green manufacture, green sugar

Concern for environmental pollution is prompting a case for some radical thinking in changing the traditional manufacturing scheme during sugar production. Sources of green power include bagasse, usually burnt in the boilers in cane sugar mills, and b eet pulp, if it is supplied by new pressurized steam dryers. The traditional polluting calco-carbonic system could be replaced in beet sugar factories by new schemes based on cooling crystallization, capillary microfiltration, ultrafiltration, chromatogr aphic techniques. Some proposals for green sugar production are already available; it is the turn of the sugar industry to accept the challenge.
