India - WTO rejects government's arguments on raw sugar export subsidy

The World Trade Organization (WTO) has reportedly not accepted the view of the Indian government on the raw sugar export subsidy whereby it had stated that the export subsidy is aimed at cane millers and farmers and not exporters, a local daily reported. According to members of the WTO who have raised the objection on the scheme, such subsidies directly or indirectly benefit the exporters. This indirectly distorts the global price of raw sugar in the international market. Thus as per the WTO view, the scheme should be stopped. In view of these developments, the ministry of food which manages the commodity has decided to review the entire scheme. Then the scheme will be sent to the cabinet for the final decision whether or not to continue with it if continued then in what form.
