New zealand state-owned railway company KiwiRail has been put on short-term life support by the government which is refusing to make any long-term commitment to investing further capital in the national railway network or its operations.rnThe government announced in its May 27 budget that it will provide a $NZ 90 million operating subsidy for railfreight operations in recognition of rail's strategic role in the economy.
