Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) has awarded Keolis Commuter Services, a 60:40 joint venture between Keolis and French National Railways (SNCF), an eight-year $US 2.68bn contract to operate the 610km suburban rail network around Boston. The contract includes options for two extensions for up to four years which if exercised could take the total value to $US 4.3bn. The 14-line 132-station network is the sixth-busiest commuter rail system in the United States, with weekday ridership of around 128,000.
