The inductive conductivity cell is widely used by many companies for oceanographic conductivity measurements. Advantages include: the absence of electrodes to corrode; durable surfaces for cleaning; and a ruggedness capable of withstanding extreme internal pressures during freezing or shock. In its simplest form, it has one disadvantage - that there must be a current path around the outside of the cell to complete the electrical circuit. Although when used in the sea this external path has a comparatively low resistance, the proximity of the cell to other conductors or insulators will influence the reading, and for the accuracies demanded by the most rigorous applications, approaching 0.002psu, this can be a limitation.
