The president of Colombia is officially commander in chief of the armed forces. However, the civilian minister of national defense essentially exercises day-to-day operational and administrative control over all three services and the National Police. Almost invariably, a senior Army officer is designated the General Commanding Officer, and a Combined General Staff coordinates interservice activity. Each service also has its own commanding officer and general staff. A Combined Operational Command controls and coordinates the activities of the three services and the National Police.
