The central problem of Galois theory (for a given field K) is to describe the absolute Galois group Gal(K) of K; a "less ambitious" version of this is the so-called inverse Galois problem which asks whether a given finite group G occurs as a Galois group over K, that is, as a finite quotient of Gal(K).
