Seminars of the Aegean: Naxos, September 2003 - 'Rethinking Radical Spatial Approaches'

To mark the celebration of 20 years since the inaugural plenary sessions in 1983, the Seminars of the Aegean returned to the island of Naxos in 2003, the site of the first seminar, bringing together well-known academics, younger colleagues and postgraduate students from all over Europe, the US and Canada. The contributions, responding to the urge to 'rethink' within a radical spatial framework, covered a wide range of topics, from policies addressing inequalities or problems of social exclusion at the local level, up to broader scale issues such as war conflicts and the new imperialism. In this report we briefly sketch some of the lineaments of the debates.%En 2003, pour marquer le vingtième anniversaire des sessions plénières inaugurales de 1983, les Seminars of the Aegean sont revenus dans l'île de Naxos, site de ces premières rencontres internationales, en réunissant intellectuels de renom, collègues plus jeunes et étudiants de troisième cycle venus de toute l'Europe, des Etats-Unis et du Canada. Les interventions, suscitées par l'urgence de 're-réfléchir' dans un cadre spatial novateur, ont couvert une grande variété de sujets, allant des politiques sur les inégalités et les problèmes d'exclusion sociale au niveau local, jusqu'à des questions plus vaste telles que les conflits armés et le nouvel impérialisme. Ce compte rendu esquisse brièvement quelques aspects caractéristiques des débats.
