For some time IJURR has had a policy of limiting membership of its Editorial Board to, at most, eight years, in order to ensure that the journal is constantly being refreshed with new voices and perspectives. Sadly, this means that we regularly say "good bye" and "thank you" to treasured colleagues. At the end of 2007, Alan Harding stepped down from the Editorial Board and from his position as co-editor. Alan played a major transitional role as co-editor for three years, bringing his excellent judgement and good humour to the team, as well as introducing us to a surprising number of bars in diverse cities around the world. At the end of 2008, Takashi Machimura also stepped down from the Editorial Board. Takashi is a wonderfully kind, generous and unassuming scholar. Those of us who attended the RC21 conference in Tokyo in December 2008, held in the delightful surroundings of the International House of Japan in Roppongi, know very well how Takashi invests great care and effort in everything he does. The Editorial Board will miss greatly both Alan and Takashi.
