摘要

In Australia in 2001 the life expectancy of an Aboriginal male was 59 years. The life expectancy of a non-Indigenous male was 76 years. One of the ways in which governments in Australia are seeking to 'close the gap' for life expectancy, and many other dimensions of Indigenous disadvantage, is through housing policy and programs. The housing circumstances of Indigenous Australians are testimony to the extent of their disadvantage. An Indigenous household in Australia, compared to a non-Indigenous household, is half as likely to be a homeowner, twice as likely to be a renter, three times more likely to be homeless and over four times more likely to live in overcrowded housing conditions.
