Improving technology transfer through the management of stakeholder networks: theoretical perspectives

Applying social network theory to technology transfer processes may help to improve the rate of success by reducing the liability of newness of new technologies. The fundamental thesis advanced in this paper is that firms can improve the chances of successful technology transfer by improving the network structures and networking processes among technology transfer stakeholders. Much of the discussion is based on research findings in the entrepreneurship literature. By managing the size, structure, and composition of stakeholder networks and increasing the level of internal and external networking among the various stakeholders, firms can better assess, strategize, and implement opportunities for technology transfer. In addition, the importance of maintaining a marketing orientation and managing conflict throughout the process are discussed. Finally, a summary model which integrates the concepts in this paper is presented and future research directions and practical implications are discussed.
