This work is an extended meditation on the relationship between nature and grace organized around the doctrine of the incarnation. Tanner's purpose is to demonstrate what it means to say that God desires to enter into the 'closest possible relationship' with the world, one in which God gives the world 'God's very own life and not simply some created version of it'. This relationship 'comes to completion in Christ' (pp. vii-viii).
